Are you itching to take your first solo travel trip but are unsure where to go? Choosing your destination is the first step to solo travel and, given that there are so many options and so many considerations, it can be a tough choice.
However, this 3-minute video from Bring Me! does a great job of choosing 15 worldwide solo travel destinations to suit all interests and travel styles. Look also at the reasons why they have selected these places
With the exception of the Grand Smoky Mountains, La Fortuna and Reykjavik, I have visited all of these destinations and broadly agree with their inclusion in this video. Tokyo is one of my favourite cities in the world. It is safe, has a great transport infrastructure, food to die for and fizzes with energy. Tulum combines exploring the vestiges of Mayan culture with fantastic beaches.
However, my lingering memory of Marrakech is being groped in Djemaa El Fna, the city’s main square. Walking through its souks was an exercise in running the gauntlet of aggressive vendors. Not such a great travel experience or destination for me.
So what is it that makes the perfect solo travel destination? Sadly, there is no magic formula and creating your perfect solo travel destination is a carefully balanced recipe of the following ingredients:
- Safety – e.g. crime, terrorism threat
- Convenience – e.g.travel infrastructure, visa requirements
- Duration of travel
- Preferred activities – city or country, recharge or adventure?
- Preferred climate
It’s not easy. I argue that there’s no such thing as a definitive list of perfect solo destinations but, as with many other life decisions, it boils down to balancing competing priorities. Having said that, it’s good to have a few ideas and inspiration for starters.
